ROTARY CLUB OF CEDAR RAPIDS RIPPLES FROM THE RAPIDS MONDAY, AUGUST 30, 2004 Editor: Larry H. Christy * Telephone: 363-6301 * Fax: 363-6301 * E-Mail: crrotary@mchsi.com * Web Site: www.rotaryclubofcedarrapids.org * District 5970 * Club 2185 * Chartered June 1, 1914 CEDAR RAPIDS SUNRISE A reminder that Cedar Rapids Sunrise is now permanently meeting at Elmcrest Country Club at 7:00 A. M. on Thursday. CLUB START-TIME IS NOW 12:15 P. M. The Rotary Club of Cedar Rapids weekly meeting on Monday is now beginning promptly at 12:15 P. M. It is much appreciated that almost all members are arriving in time to be seated by the new 12:15 P. M. start-time. In the interest of allowing enough time for Rotary business, allowing adequate time for our programs and as a courtesy to all of our members, the board decided to begin the weekly meeting at a slightly earlier start-time in order that members can plan on meetings generally ending at 1 P. M. DAVID OMAN, NANCY QUELHORST AND KELLY HAYWORTH THE IOWA ENVIRONMENTAL/EDUCATIONAL PROJECT The Environmental Project to be located in Coralville is being created by the not-for profit Iowa Child Institute of which David Oman is the Administrator. The facility will include a 4.5 acre indoor tropical rain forest; one million gallon freshwater aquarium; 50,000 square foot learning Center; 10-acre recreated tall grass Iowa prairie and wetlands feature and interior galleries on Iowa's now rare prairie ecosystem, geology and agriculture. The mission of the project is to create the world's largest ecologically-oriented learning environment - an iconic project celebrating mankind's link with the natural world. It is to be built in Coralville on a 30-acre EPA "Brownfield" site next to the Iowa River just south of Interstate 80 near First Avenue and exit 242. The cost of the project, including land, is estimated at $180 million. Approximately 50% of the funding has been secured; $50 million through the federal Department of Energy, $20 million from in-kind commitments from the City of Coralville, and $10 million from Des Moines businessman, and project founder, Ted Townsend. There is also a $10 million in-kind partnership available from an out-of-state energy company. It is anticipated additional funding will include corporate and private sources as well as the State of Iowa. Feasibility studies that have been conducted on the project estimate direct, indirect and induced efforts of visitor spending statewide at $187 million annually with a ripple effect of 1,400 full-time and part-time jobs and associated earnings of nearly $28 million. In Linn County the impact is estimated at $72 million annually, a ripple effect of nearly 1,100 full-time and part-time jobs with earnings of over $18 million. The Environmental Project will have a full-time staff equivalence of approximately 290 employees and a payroll of $9 million (2004 dollars). That calculates to an average salary of approximately $31,000.Individual salaries will range from $9 per hour for entry level positions to over $100,000 for senior management and scientific positions. The Environmental Project claims a conservative annual attendance estimate would be 1.1 to 1.5 million visitors annually. These figures represent attendance scenarios during a stabilized year of operation occurring several years after the project's opening. It is based on comparable attractions throughout the United States and in the Midwest, demographic characteristics of the Resident Market Population, local and state tourist market profiles and IEEP's program characteristics. The only comparable indoor rain forest exhibit in the world in Cornwall England, five hours from London, now has a stable-year attendance of 1.5 million. Groundbreaking is scheduled for late 2004. Site work and construction will begin in 2005. Exhibit construction should begin in 2006 and continue through 2007. The Environmental Project is scheduled to open on Earth Day in April of 2008. We assign approximately ten members (including the host) to each site unless the host indicates a larger number can be accommodated. The host has the responsibility of deciding on lunch, collecting from the members, if appropriate, and deciding on a menu. Attendance is taken at breakouts and a breakout counts as a regular club meeting. If you are willing to serve as a breakout host, please notify Breakout Chair Cathy Gullickson (398-6278) (cgullickson@mcercycare.org) or Secretary Larry Christy (363-6301) (crrotary@mchsi.com). A TRIP TO THE YUCATAN PENINSULA OF MEXICO The Rotary Club of Cedar Rapids has supported A Promise of Health for the past two years. A Promise of Health is assisting the Mayan Indians of the Yucatan with free health care to the Maya. Our members are invited to tour the Maya villages the project is serving. The tour will be conducted by Barb and Bill Grannell and Carl and Mary Carson. Carl and Mary are retired Cedar Rapids school teachers. What better opportunity to see our donations at work and enjoy a winter get-away to the tropics? There are two tour options available: Join us by land: February 1-6 "Treasures of the Yucatan" For $725 you can enjoy a 7 night land tour of the western Caribbean including Merida, Uxmal, Kabah, plus the ruins at Chichen Itza and Celestun. When in Progresso, an A Promise of Health tour bus will pick you up for a trip to the villages where APOH operates. Contact Nicole Rydell at the Cedar Rapids AAA office for a price including airfare or arrange your own. Join us by sea: January 30 - February 6 "Carnival Cruise" For $729 from Galveston, Texas, you can enjoy a Caribbean Cruise with all the amenities offered by Carnival "Elation" including outside cabins, plus you will be met at the Port of Progresso by Grannells and Carsons and given a guided tour of the work of A Promise of Health in one or more villages as time allows. Ports of call: Progresso, Cozumel and Belize City. The AAA agent, Nicole Rydell, is taking reservations and can answer your questions. You can add on additional time to vacation in the Yucatan resorts if that interests you. Nicole's number is 395-7325. Please make reservations as soon as possible because space is limited.
