| Ripples from the Rapids - August 23, 2004 | | ROTARY CLUB OF CEDAR RAPIDS RIPPLES FROM THE RAPIDS MONDAY, AUGUST 23, 2004 Editor: Larry H. Christy * Telephone: 363-6301 * Fax: 363-6301 * E-Mail: crrotary@mchsi.com * Web Site: www.rotaryclubofcedarrapids.org * District 5970 * Club 2185 * Chartered June 1, 1914 CLUB START-TIME IS NOW 12:15 P. M. The Rotary Club of Cedar Rapids weekly meeting on Monday is now beginning promptly at 12:15 P. M. It is much appreciated that almost all members are arriving in time to be seated by the new 12:15 P. M. start-time. In the interest of allowing enough time for Rotary business, allowing adequate time for our programs and as a courtesy to all of our members, the board decided to begin the weekly meeting at a slightly earlier start-time in order that members can plan on meetings generally ending at 1 P. M. GARY CONNORS-BOE, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR THE FOUR OAKS FOUNDATION In 1974. Four Oaks (then called Boys Acres) opened a small residential campus in Bertram, Iowa. The facility served 12 homeless boys. Since then, Four Oaks has grown to become one of the largest not-for-profit child welfare/juvenile justice agencies in Iowa serving over 5,000 people annually throughout the state. With offices in 12 Iowa cities (Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Des Moines, Waterloo, Dubuque, Bertram, Monticello, Oelwein Manchester, Independence, Perry and Newton), Four Oaks offers services to all 99 counties in Iowa. Gary Connors-Boe assumed the position of Executive Director of the Four Oaks Foundation approximately three months ago. He had formerly served as a Lutheran pastor in Cedar Rapids and then as a counselor at Children and Families of Iowa in Des Moines and a chaplain/counselor at the Newton Correctional Facility, a medium to maximum security prison in central Iowa. At Newton he dealt with the boys who had not found their way to a Children and Families of Iowa or a Four Oaks and as a result had ended up in prison and on their way there had left a wake of enormous hurt and terrible damage to their communities. He discovered that most of the kids treated in facilities like Children and Families of Iowa and Four Oaks could be rescued and that most at the Newton facility would have responded positively had they been exposed to a Four Oaks. The good news is that lots of troubled kids do find their way to human service agencies like Four Oaks and that is good news indeed for kids, their families, the community and for all of us. Four Oaks deals with child abuse, child sexual abuse, drug and alcohol abuse, felony theft, criminal assault, delinquency and truancy, academic under-achievement and drug related crime. Four Oaks tries to maximize the positive results it can get from available resources. This includes involvement in prevention programs too and so, besides doing treatment and foster care and involvement in adoption matters, Four Oaks also helps parents to find jobs, helps kids with homework and teaches parenting and child development skills and arranges for at-risk children to develop positive hobbies and gives low income kids a safe and happy place to come after school or to hang out in the summer. CLUB SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM A major focus of support by this club has been our scholarship program for single parents, displaced homemakers, qualified international students and others with significant financial needs. Since 1992, our club has made annual distributions of scholarship funds to Kirkwood, Coe and Mount Mercy in Cedar Rapids. Beginning with the 1997-98 Rotary year Cornell College in Mount Vernon was added as a fourth recipient. Each school is asked to report to us when the identity of their scholarship recipients is determined. This year, $3000 was allocated to Cornell College. The board has received the following report from Cornell. To: The Rotary Club of Cedar Rapids: On behalf of Cornell College, I write to express my deep appreciation to the Rotary Club of Cedar Rapids for the recent contribution for scholarships. We have identified three very deserving students as recipients of the scholarships for the 2004-2005 academic year. Nichole Fetzer will be a junior majoring in Psychology. Nichole is expecting her first child in November of 2004 and plans to raise the child on her own while she continues her education. Nichole has a 3.0 GPA and is very determined to finish her degree at Cornell. Catherine Fruehling-Wall will be a senior. She maintains a strong 3.8 GPA while majoring in Psychology. Catherine stays extremely busy with her 5 year old daughter, school, and being involved in the community. Eric Schroeder will be an incoming freshman and plans on majoring in History while at Cornell. Eric has been living with his Grandparents this past year and does not have any support from his biological parents for college. He is paying for college on his own, and any assistance is helpful to give him the opportunity to pursue a college education. As in prior years, the Rotary Scholarships help fine students continue their college studies. The students are extremely grateful for this support and I am grateful for the Club's commitment to education and to these young people. Sincerely yours, Leslie H. Garner, Jr. President This year, $3000 was allocated to Mount Mercy College. The board has received the following report from Mount Mercy. To: The Rotary Club of Cedar Rapids: This is to acknowledge receipt of and to thank you for the check in the amount of $3,000 representing a gift from the Cedar Rapids Rotary Club to Mount Mercy College. Following the guidelines of the Scholarship Program, these funds will be used to assist our international students in their educational pursuits. In particular the Rotary Scholarship has been an important factor in facilitating our student exchange with Palacky University in the Czech Republic. These funds will assist our Czech students attending Mount Mercy during the 2004-1005 academic year. Ms. Radka Horakova and Ms. Jana Vejberova from the Czech Republic are the recipients of this year's scholarships. On behalf of the international students who have benefited from the generosity of the Cedar Rapids Rotary Club, I thank you. Yours truly, Robert W. Pearce President BUSINESS BREAKOUTS - NOVEMBER 8, 2004 Monday, November 8, 2004 is scheduled for Breakout Sessions at business locations of Cedar Rapids Rotary members. There is no set program. Hosts are free to have general conversation. The breakout might provide a tour of the host facility. The idea is to have a small group engage in meaningful conversation with fellow Rotarians. These sessions have always been popular with our members and we try to schedule them at least twice a year. The Mercy Medical Center Foundation has volunteered to act as a host. Please consider serving as a breakout host. We need approximately 25 businesses to volunteer as sites for our breakouts. We assign approximately ten members (including the host) to each site unless the host indicates a larger number can be accommodated. The host has the responsibility of deciding on lunch, collecting from the members, if appropriate, and deciding on a menu. Attendance is taken at breakouts and a breakout counts as a regular club meeting. If you are willing to serve as a breakout host, please notify Breakout Chair Cathy Gullickson (398-6278) (cgullickson@mcercycare.org) or Secretary Larry Christy (363-6301) (crrotary@mchsi.com) The Rotary Club of Cedar Rapids e-mail address is: crrotary@mchsi.com AND We continue to invite you to visit our Rotary Club of Cedar Rapids Web Site.
