DR. JOHN OLSON, MANAGER OF INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION OPERATIONS, NASA

Dr. Olson is the manger of International Space Station (ISS) Operations in the Mission Support Division of the Office of Safety and Mission Assurance (OSMA) at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C.  Dr. Olson is primarily responsible for safe on-orbit operations of the planned $80 billion ISS, which includes all aspects of risk control for the facility, visiting vehicles and payloads.  He is also responsible for assuring that the proper integration of safety design requirements, safe operating procedures and the associated flight rules are consistent with NASA Headquarters Safety Policy and Risk Management Directives.  He is also the lead for the Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV).

In 2004, President Bush announced his Vision for Space Exploration, giving the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) a new and historic focus and clear objectives.  The fundamental goal of the Vision is “...to advance U. S. scientific, security and economic interests through a robust space exploration program.”  It commits the nation to return human explorers to the Moon by the end of the next decade and to prepare for the exploration of Mars that will follow.  NASA is now working hard to develop a new generation of spacecraft and space launch vehicles that will enable the achievement of these goals within the expenditure of tax revenues invested in space exploration and research - approximately $55 per year for every American citizen.

Dr. Olson discussed the International Space Station (ISS) program at some length.  The ISS establishes a permanent human presence in Earth orbit.  It also provides a long-duration, habitable laboratory for science and research activities investigating the limits of human performance, expanding human experience in living and working in space and enabling the commercial development of space.

DOWNTOWN ROTARY SPONSORS MASSACHUSETTS TEAM IN LEGION WORLD SERIES

The 80th Annual American Legion World Series is over and the winner is the team from Metairie, Louisiana.  The team sponsored by Cedar Rapids Rotary, Milton, Massachusetts, was eliminated by Metairie on Sunday, the third day of the five day tournament by a score of 10-4.  The Milton team was composed of players from 10 area high schools.  The boys ranged in age from 14-19.  The 18 member team was accompanied by two coaches.

The 20 visitors from Milton were entertained by Cedar Rapids Rotary on Wednesday, August 16, prior to the beginning of the tournament.  Larry Helling and Dennis Wangeman drove two vans to transport the team for a tour of Kernels Stadium followed by dinner at Amana’s Ox Yoke Inn.  Rotarian Dennis VanAuken was the third Rotarian host for the evening.  The players were very impressed with the new stadium (tournament officials declaring it to be the best they had played in).

Dennis Wangeman explained that Amana was chosen because it was felt the boys would not have had a similar food experience in Massachusetts.  A survey taken at the dinner revealed that most of the boys had never been outside of their home state.  Wangeman commented on what nice young men they were and how much the three Rotarians enjoyed entertaining them.  The Rotary hosts presented each member of the team and the coaches with an American Legion World Series baseball and holder and an American Legion baseball hat in honor of the occasion.

A World Series Banquet of Champions was held on August 17 at the Crowne Plaza where the keynote speaker was Ferguson Jenkins, Chicago Cubs pitcher from 1966-1973 and the 1971 National League Cy Young Award winner.

We hope Cedar Rapids will be able to bring the tournament back in future years.  Our appreciation to the entire committee for their hard work representing our club.

ROTARY BREAKOUTS SCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER 25, 2005

Monday, September 25, 2006 is scheduled for Breakout Sessions at business locations of Cedar Rapids Rotary members.  There is no set program.  Hosts are free to have general conversation.  The breakout might provide a tour of the host facility.  The idea is to have a small group engage in meaningful conversation with fellow Rotarians.  These sessions have always been popular with our members and we try to schedule them at least twice a year.

We assign approximately ten members (including the host) to each site unless the host indicates a larger number can be accommodated.  The host has the responsibility of deciding on lunch, collecting from the members, if appropriate, and deciding on a menu.

We still need about 7 or 8 more Breakout hosts.  If you are willing to serve as a host, please notify Cathy Gullickson or Larry Christy (see addresses below).  Breakout host volunteers to date include: AdTrack Corporation, Allen Motor Company, Bankers Trust, Divine Engineering, Gazette Communications, Iowa Workforce Development, Kirkwood Community College, Management Resource Group, Mount Mercy College, Pioneer Workspace Solutions, Inc., Premiere Developers, Inc.,  RSM McGladrey, Inc., Shive-Hattery, Inc., Smuelekoff’s, Trees Forever, United Way of East Central Iowa, Waypoint and Wells Fargo Bank.

IMPORTANT

CAN’T BE THERE?

ONLY 12 ROTARIANS HAVE INDICATED THEY WILL NOT BE AT THE BREAKOUTS.  THIS WOULD MEAN WE WILL NEED ABOUT 33 HOSTS.  NORMALLY WE NEED ABOUT 25 HOSTS.  IF YOU KNOW YOU WILL BE UNABLE TO ATTEND OR DO NOT DESIRE TO ATTEND A BREAKOUT ON SEPTEMBER 25, IT WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED IF YOU WOULD NOTIFY BREAKOUT CHAIR CATHY GULLICKSON (398-6278) (e-mail: cgullickson@mercycare.org) OR SECRETARY LARRY CHRISTY (363-6301) (e-mail crrotary@mchsi.com) SO THAT YOUR NAME WILL NOT BE ASSIGNED TO A HOST.   This is very important, as it will help insure that the balance of Rotarians between breakout sites is optimized and a full complement of members is present at each site.

SMOKE DETECTORS FOR AT-RISK FAMILIES

Smoke alarms make a significant difference in household fires.  In the past ten years, despite 14 fire fatalities in Cedar Rapids, there has not been a fatal fire in a home in which we know that the smoke alarms were working properly.  Further there is a direct correlation between having a smoke alarm that works and whether a fire even occurs in a home – only 28 percent of all fires occurred last year in homes that had a working smoke alarm!

The Cedar Rapids Fire Department found that a significant number of residential fires occurred in the elementary school districts in which the majority of the students receive free or reduced lunch assistance (Gearing Up for Kids Schools).  In fact, 74 percent of all the household fires occurred in 12 specific school boundaries which comprise just 47% of the population.

The Fire Department has asked for volunteers from area Rotary clubs to install smoke detectors with 10-year batteries in homes in these school areas, providing working smoke alarms in the homes of every enrolled student in these 12 at-risk elementary schools.

The goal is to have about 50 volunteers each Saturday from August 26 through November 18, 2006.  The time commitment will be about four hours to help install smoke detectors and/or replace batteries.  The Fire Department will provide training beginning at the various schools at 8 AM on the assigned Saturday.
