JANE COOK, VICE PRESIDENT, BUSINESS STRATEGIES & PETER JACOBUS, VICE PRESIDENT, NORTH AMERICAN TELEVISION

FRANK N. MAGID ASSOCIATES, INC.

Frank N. Magid Associates, Inc. is a research-based strategic consultation company founded almost 50 years ago.  It has more than 180 employees in offices in New York, Los Angeles, Minneapolis and Cedar Rapids and a sales office in London.  Broadcast television remains the foundation of the business, but new developments in technology over the past 20 years have resulted in many new areas of consultation.

Media in 1986 consisted basically of broadcast television, cable television, radio, newspapers, magazines, telephones and VHS equipment.  Today media also includes HDTV, digital cable, satellite TV, slingbox, digital subchannels, DVD, DVR, Internet, E-mail, blogs, vlogs, satellite radio, wireless phones, text messaging, iPods, podcasting, video game consoles, internet gaming, Blackberry, PDA, PSP and RSS.

Interesting research:
• People still watch a lot of TV: Viewership rose 30% from 2003 to 2005 to more than 4 hours per day.  The largest increase was in the age 35-54-age-group which increased from 2.83 hours to 4.02 hours per week.
• Internet access is nearly a given.  In 1999, 47% of the adult U. S. population had access to the Internet compared to 79% by 2005.  A staggering 91% of 18-34-year-olds had access.  Forty percent of 25-54-year-olds have Internet access at work.
• Broadband has overtaken narrowband at home with high-speed households up to 58% of Internet homes.  Internet access through a standard telephone line has decreased 40% over the last five years while access through cable modem has increased 17% and through DSL (digital subscriber lines) has increased 23%.
• Internet and Television are the overall top two media of choice.  The Internet was first choice to 46% and TV was the first choice of 35%.  Books were a distant third at 8% and newspapers tied with radio at 3%.  However, the Internet was the only medium with a significant net growth in perceived time spent – 47% said they spend more time on the Internet compared to a year ago.  The Internet was also found to be by far the most important source of information with 42% finding it a very important source (newspapers were 17% and only 2% finding it not at all important (17% found newspapers not at all important).

The “Millennial Generation” is closely monitored and researched by Magid.  The Millennials were born between 1977-1996 and they are now 79 million strong, slightly larger than the Baby Boomer Generation at 78 million.  Influenced by 9/11, the War on Terror, Title IX (gender equality), soccer moms and organized recreation; they are  just entering the workforce and are the first generation to grow up surrounded by a digital world.

Why care about the Millennials?  There are a lot of them and understanding them will become essential to business success.  They are confident and upbeat, collaborative and gravitate toward group activity, conforming and content.  Today’s technology keeps the Millennials “connected”:

• 90 percent of 18-30-year-old own cell phones and 83% say it has high value for money.
• Being connected to friends and family is key: 59% spend one to two hours a day talking on the cell phone and one in four text message for an hour or more each day.
• Cell phones are social tools through which Millennials find validation, love and advice.
• Laptops are also a valuable Millennial communication tool – 53% own a laptop.
• The Internet is the first source of news and information for Millennials.
• On an average day Millennials spend 2.5 hours watching TV, 2.5 hours surfing the Internet, 2.3 hours listening to music, 1.8 hours on e-mail/chatting online, 1.2 hours talking on cell phone, 1.1 hours watching DVDs and 1.1 hours gaming.  They are multitaskers and do much of this at the same time.

A ROTARY MOMENT

August 28, 2006

What makes RI so unique is that we have established a network of more than 32,000 clubs worldwide all busily implementing successful, long-term projects. Sometimes, however, an immediate emergency response is necessary.

The conflict in the Middle East has left an estimated 916,000 people displaced within and outside Lebanon. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reports that following the recent ceasefire Lebanon experienced an influx of an estimated 60,000 refugees returning from Syria. The displaced population is living in temporary shelters, often without public services, and is in need of basic items such as clothes, water, food and medicine.

The Lebanese public health system is overwhelmed with hospitals and clinics in affected areas isolated and lacking essential supplies. Damage to the infrastructure in Lebanon, including roads, power plants, water works, airports, harbors, and telecommunication networks has created transportation and communication difficulties.

All 20 Rotary clubs and 15 Rotaract clubs in Lebanon (part of District 2450) have established the "Rotary Lebanon Emergency Committee (RoLEC)" fund to provide humanitarian relief. They will coordinate both immediate humanitarian relief and long-term recovery projects, and are also working with relief agencies such as the Red Cross, Medecins sans Frontieres and UNICEF to carry out their efforts.

The local clubs are committed to providing humanitarian relief through cleaning campaigns, provision of food, shelter and basic necessities such as clothes, hygienic items, mattresses, appliances, and cleaning supplies. They are ensuring that adults and children receive medical check-ups, medicine and mental health services. Some clubs are also providing entertainment and toys for children in a safe environment.

A permanent committee has been appointed to ensure transparency of activities and fund distribution. The committee will continuously monitor needs, maintain records of the internally displaced, and identify various tools for their relief.

ROTARY BREAKOUTS SCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER 25, 2005

Monday, September 25, 2006 is scheduled for Breakout Sessions at business locations of Cedar Rapids Rotary members.  There is no set program.  Hosts are free to have general conversation.  The breakout might provide a tour of the host facility.  The idea is to have a small group engage in meaningful conversation with fellow Rotarians.  These sessions have always been popular with our members and we try to schedule them at least twice a year.

We assign approximately ten members (including the host) to each site unless the host indicates a larger number can be accommodated.  The host has the responsibility of deciding on lunch, collecting from the members, if appropriate, and deciding on a menu.

Breakout host volunteers to date include: AdTrack Corporation, Allen Motor Company, Bankers Trust, Cedar Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce, Corridor Business Journal, Cottage Grove Place, Divine Engineering, Gazette Communications, Iowa Workforce Development, Kirkwood Community College, Management Resource Group, Mount Mercy College, Pioneer Workspace Solutions, Inc., Premiere Developers, Inc.,  RSM McGladrey, Inc., Shive-Hattery, Inc., Smuelekoff’s, Trees Forever, Tucker Manufacturing Company, United Way of East Central Iowa, Vernon Research Group, Inc., Waypoint and Wells Fargo Bank.

IMPORTANT!

CAN’T BE THERE?

IF YOU KNOW YOU WILL BE UNABLE TO ATTEND OR DO NOT DESIRE TO ATTEND A BREAKOUT ON SEPTEMBER 25, IT WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED IF YOU WOULD NOTIFY BREAKOUT CHAIR CATHY GULLICKSON (398-6278) (e-mail: cgullickson@mercycare.org) OR SECRETARY LARRY CHRISTY (363-6301) (e-mail crrotary@mchsi.com) SO THAT YOUR NAME WILL NOT BE ASSIGNED TO A HOST.   This is very important, as it will help insure that the balance of Rotarians between breakout sites is optimized and a full complement of members is present at each site.

SMOKE DETECTORS FOR AT-RISK FAMILIES

Smoke alarms make a significant difference in household fires.  In the past ten years, despite 14 fire fatalities in Cedar Rapids, there has not been a fatal fire in a home in which we know that the smoke alarms were working properly.  Further there is a direct correlation between having a smoke alarm that works and whether a fire even occurs in a home – only 28 percent of all fires occurred last year in homes that had a working smoke alarm!

The Cedar Rapids Fire Department found that a significant number of residential fires occurred in the elementary school districts in which the majority of the students receive free or reduced lunch assistance (Gearing Up for Kids Schools).  In fact, 74 percent of all the household fires occurred in 12 specific school boundaries which comprise just 47% of the population.

The Fire Department has asked for volunteers from area Rotary clubs to install smoke detectors with 10-year batteries in homes in these school areas, providing working smoke alarms in the homes of every enrolled student in these 12 at-risk elementary schools.

The goal is to have about 50 volunteers each Saturday from August 26 through November 18, 2006.  The time commitment will be about four hours to help install smoke detectors and/or replace batteries.  The Fire Department will provide training beginning at the various schools at 8 AM on the assigned Saturday.
